4th International Best Practice Competition – First announcement
After three successful years of the International Best practice Competition, the location of the next competition has just been announced. The 4th International Best Practice Competition will be held in Manila, Philippines in November 2015. Further details will be announced shortly.

Entries are expected from all around the world – the winner in 2014 was Al Jazeera International Catering (UAE), and 2013 was the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (Singapore) and 2012, Curtin University (Australia).

The Best Practice Competition encourages organizations to share their best operational and managerial practices, processes, systems, and initiatives and learn from the experience of others. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams that have been responsible for creating and/or managing the introduction and deployment of best practices.

Have a think about what your organization does well, and be prepared to submit your entry. If successful you will be asked to share your best practice in an 8 minute presentation. Winners will receive widespread media coverage.

From the feedback of previous years we are expecting much more participation this year, which makes this event a great learning experience.

For more information about the competition visit the competition website BestPracticeCompetition.com

    Lean thinking handbook facilitates success
The motto of the University of St Andrews’ is ‘ever to be the best’, and this links perfectly with the goal of Lean thinking. The lean team challenged the University to become the best that it could be. They were dedicated to eliminating non value adding activity so that the University could focus its energies on Teaching and Research. The lean team acting as the University’s change management consultancy led staff to create a culture of continuous improvement and respect for people. A number of improvements were made which led to significant savings in costs, labour, and materials. By the end of the fourth year of the lean implementation the University had released the annual equivalent of 24.63 full time equivalent staff. To facilitate this lean implementation a pocket guide to becoming lean was published by the University. …..….read more

    Strategic Partnering
To reduce transportation costs, delivery distances and CO2 emissions, Ocean Spray, a US growers cooperative, partnered with a competitor, Tropicana, to supply its markets in the Northeast US, Tropicana shipped orange juice by train from Florida to New Jersey and Tropicana was paying to send them back empty. One of Tropicana’s logistics suppliers realised that it and Ocean Spray, a cranberry juice maker based in Massachusetts who had a distribution centre in Florida to meet growing demands for its products in the southern US, could partner to fill the empty trains. The logistics supplier offered to set up a road-and-rail line for Ocean Spray that included a competitive price for Tropicana’s empty boxcars. After initial concerns about partnering closely with a chief competitor, the collaboration went ahead, and Ocean Spray cut its transportation costs by more than 40% and its greenhouse gas emissions by 65%. ……..read more case studies.

Targets were set for reductions in greenhouse gas, water and waste. Domtar recaptured steam generated in its operations through co-generation, and produced electrons and used then to either power mills or sold them to the grid In 2013, 76.3% of energy used came from renewable resources and another 3% to 4% on top of that was generated and sold to the grid. Domtar also allowed other companies to set up operations to tap into Domtar’s CO2 emissions and use the CO2 to create carbonic acid, and use it to create precipitated calcium carbonate, or PCC. Dignity Health (DH) needed to collaborate more extensively with its business partners and to rapidly provide new services to its physicians and patients. Although it was possible to provide these resources internally the services of cloud computing partner offered the advantages of quick deployment, additional skilled staff, and the use of operating expenses versus capital outlay for the provision of additional infrastructure and servers. For competitive reasons DH’s partners also preferred collaborative data to be housed at neutral sites, which also created fewer legal and compliance challenges. The cloud computing platform not only enabled data to be readily available to partners and physicians it also facilitated the use of various types of device to access it. It was envisaged that cloud services would continue to grow, but it was unlikely the existing legacy systems would ever be incorporated in the cloud.   ……..read more case studies.

BPIR service of the Month – Business Excellence Models
This area of the web-site allows  users to navigate the databases through a choice of business excellence models (Malcolm Baldrige Model, EFQM Excellence Model, Singapore Quality Award Model, Canadian Framework for Business Excellence, and an overview generic model). Navigation via the models can be used to look at specific categories that correspond to areas within their organisation that have been identified as in need of improvement, or to specific areas of personal interest. Using the model categories to navigate will quickly and effectively lead the user to the information we have researched so far in relation to the areas in question..Click here to see a video clip on how to do it.
