1. Four U.S. organizations receive nation’s highest honor for performance excellence

    U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker today named four organizations as the 2016 recipients of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest Presidential honor for sustainable excellence through visionary leadership, organizational alignment, systemic improvement and innovation. This year’s recipients—two small businesses and two health care providers—represent four states, including the first awardee from Idaho; and feature four distinctly different operations, including the first winner ever from the long-term care and rehabilitation field and the first awardee from the textile industry since 1989.
    The 2016 Baldrige Award recipients-listed with their category-are:

    “This year’s honorees are trailblazers in innovation, small business, health care and sustainable textiles. Their visionary leadership is helping to power the economy and increase our ability to compete globally,” said Secretary Pritzker. “The Commerce Department proudly supports these four outstanding organizations for their unwavering commitment to performance excellence and their dedication to always reaching higher.”

    The Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) manages the Baldrige Award in cooperation with the private sector. An independent board of examiners recommended this year’s Baldrige Award recipients from a field of 34 applicants after evaluating them in seven areas defined by the Baldrige Excellence Framework: leadership; strategy; customers; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce; operations; and results. An organization may compete for the award in one of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, health care, education and nonprofit (including government agencies).

    “We are particularly excited about the diversity of the organizations being recognized this year,” said Robert Fangmeyer, director of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. “Like those before them, the 2016 honorees have created robust processes and cultures that focus on benefitting their customers, workforce and communities, and in doing so, have achieved outstanding operational and business results.”
    To date, more than 1,600 U.S. organizations have applied for the Baldrige Award, and there are more than 30 independent Baldrige-based state and regional award programs covering nearly all 50 states. Internationally, the program has served as a model for nearly 100 excellence programs. In addition, many organizations use the Baldrige framework for its improvement and innovation strategies without applying for any of these awards.

    During the period 2010-2014, more than 4 million copies of the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, the core of the Baldrige Framework, were distributed. Their widespread acceptance and use both nationally and globally has dramatically impacted all types of organizations.
    Take for example, these achievements by the 2016 Baldrige Award winners:

    • New employees at Don Chalmers Ford (DCF) are mentored by senior leaders and work with the general manager using the firm’s “How I Connect” guide that aligns each individual’s role to the company’s core values and to delivering the “DCF Experience.” This has helped increase the retention rate of sales consultants from 56.3 percent in 2011 to 71.4 percent in 2015, and increase gross profit by 13 percent for 2012-2015. Both marks are significantly higher than the national averages of 26 percent and 8.4 percent, respectively.
    • In support of its core value of “bettering the world around us,” Momentum Group was the first in its industry to offer a full textile product line of reduced environmental impact fabrics. In just over two decades, Momentum Group’s sales have grown more than 400 percent and have outperformed the industry for 19 years out of the 22 that the firm has been in business.
    • For seven consecutive years, Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Center—Mountain Valley has achieved a five-star quality rating—the highest possible—from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, a ranking designed to help potential residents, families and caregivers compare nursing homes. Less than one percent of 15,600 skilled nursing facilities nationwide received the five-star rating over that period of time.
    • Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital ranks among the top 10 percent nationally for a number of performance metrics, including emergency center arrival-to-discharge time, compliance with regulations to reduce medication errors, bed turnaround times, radiology and laboratory result turnaround times, and the use of computerized physician order entry.

    The Baldrige judges also may recognize best practices in one or more of the Baldrige Criteria categories by organizations that are candidates for the award but are not selected as a recipient. This year, the judges have chosen six organizations for this honor (listed with the categories for which they are acknowledged):

    • City of Fort Collins, Fort Collins, Colorado—leadership
    • Kaiser Permanente San Diego, San Diego, California—leadership
    • Maury Regional Medical Center, Columbia, Tennessee—leadership
    • Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina—leadership and strategy
    • Park Place Lexus of Texas, Plano, Texas—customers
    • Southern Management Corporation, Vienna, Virginia—workforce

    The 2016 Baldrige Award will be presented at an April 2017 ceremony during the Quest for Excellence conference in Baltimore, Md.
    The Baldrige Program raises awareness about the importance of performance excellence in driving the U.S. and global economy; provides organizational assessments, training, tools and criteria; educates leaders in businesses, schools, health care organizations, and government and nonprofit organizations; shares the best practices of national role models; and recognizes those role models with the Baldrige Award. The Baldrige Program is a public-private partnership managed by NIST and funded through user fees and the financial support of the Baldrige Foundation (link is external).

    The Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987 and is not given for specific products or services. Since the first group was recognized in 1988, 113 awards have been presented to 106 organizations (including seven repeat recipients).

  3. A “Best Place to Work” with a culture of caring

    It may not surprise anyone that Baldrige Award-winning Sutter Davis Hospital is on the 2016 list of “Best Places to Work in Health Care” recognized by Modern Healthcare. The 2013 Baldrige Award recipient has made its “Culture of Caring” the foundation for excellent results in all key areas. In fact, the high-achieving hospital considers its Culture of Caring to be its core competency.

    Following are highlights from the profile of Sutter Davis Hospital on the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program’s website:

    • The Culture of Caring is reinforced through senior leaders’ dedication to safe patient care, an engaged workforce and the community. Annual goals and action plans create accountability for the delivery of a consistently positive patient experience. This accounts for the hospital’s solid clinical quality ratings and outcomes and its strong position as a preferred place to work and practice medicine.
    • Sutter Davis Hospital demonstrates high standards for work and process efficiency. For example, the average door-to-doctor time in emergency has decreased from 45 minutes in 2008 to 22 minutes in 2012, well below the California benchmark of 58 minutes.
    • An organizational focus on people is reflected in Sutter Davis Hospital’s employee satisfaction and engagement scores, which exceed the top 10 percent of marks in a national survey database. Physician satisfaction shows sustained improvement over the past three years, increasing from 80 percent to 90 percent, and attaining Press Ganey top 10 percent performance in 2011 and 2012.
    • Measures of workforce climate at Sutter Davis Hospital exceed targeted goals of Sutter Health (the parent organization). Employees have rated workforce health, safety and security at 100 percent from 2008 to 2012. Employee perceptions of safety exceed national top 10 percent benchmarks as measured in the hospital’s annual Culture of Safety survey.

    How Sutter Davis Hospital builds an effective and supportive workforce environment and engages its workforce to achieve a high-performance work environment (the basic requirements of category 5 of the Baldrige Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence) are described in a summary of the organization’s 2013 application for the Baldrige Award, which is publicly available on the Baldrige Program website.

    As that document indicates, benefits for Sutter Davis Hospital employees have included discounted daycare, tuition reimbursement, employee discounts at health clubs and amusement parks—and health insurance that expanded to include pet insurance and identity theft coverage based on employee feedback

    In the following excerpt, Sutter Davis Hospital (SDH) describes five approaches supporting its winning culture:
    Organizational Culture. SDH fosters an organizational culture characterized by open communication, high performance, an engaged workforce and ensures our culture benefits from the diversity of our workforce via the following mechanisms:

    1. CULTURE OF CARING classes: Quarterly, all new workforce members at SDH attend the CULTURE OF CARING class. This four-hour class orients new employees to the Sutter Davis Difference, including the Mission, Vision, and Values (MVV), STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOR, professionalism, patient satisfaction, and key resources for the workforce.
    2. Just Culture: The Just Culture process was instituted after receiving the results from our Culture of Safety survey. The Just Culture Algorithm systematically allows us to identify needed process improvements, hold employees accountable for their choices while at the same time encouraging an open learning culture. It shifts the focus from errors and outcomes to system design and behavioral choices.
    3. Round the Clocks: In order to further deploy the Sutter Davis Difference and MVV to all workforce members and to ensure SDH is communicating at all levels; the ATeam schedules quarterly Round-the-Clocks to meet with the workforce. All shifts are visited in Round the Clock meetings, during which the A Team focuses on rewarding and recognizing success, engagement and communicating key messages. In addition, volunteers receive information at least semiannually through the Volunteer Update Meeting.
    4. Interdisciplinary Practice Councils (IPCs): The IPCs allow the workforce to contribute their diverse ideas, skills and abilities to improve the workforce and patient’s experience. Open communication in the IPCs creates a work environment that promotes respect, sharing common goals, and having a voice in patient care and work environment decisions.
    5. All Staff Assembly: As a cycle of improvement, SDH began inviting all workforce members, to an annual All Staff Assembly. In a three-hour session designed to be informative, engaging, inspiring and entertaining, A Team members deploy messages related to the Sutter Davis Difference, the MVV, the Strategic Planning Process, the DASHBOARD and PILLAR performance.

  5. JIC Wins European Award for best Practices – 2016

    Al Jazeera International Catering was awarded the most prestigious European Award for best Practices – 2016. This award was presented as recognition for JIC’s best practices, adherence to the excellence program and the commitment towards sustainability and stakeholder engagement.

    The European Society for Quality Research (ESQR) recognizes and highlights outstanding business results, best practices, quality awareness and achievements by companies in regional and global markets. Through its recognition programs and awards, ESQR makes quality a top priority for the recognized organizations, regardless of their sector, size and location.

    The award was presented at a splendid Ceremony held at Le Plaza Hotel, Brussels (Belgium) on Saturday, June 4, 2016. Around 75 companies from 63 countries participated in this grand event.

    Receiving the award, Mr. Robby Thommy, Managing Director, Al Jazeera International Catering, thanked the organizers for evaluating and recognizing its commitment towards sustainability and stakeholder’s engagement. He also thanked the employees of JIC for their passion and dedication towards excellence and sustainability and said this award is a clear recognition for the commitment and attitude they possess towards the journey of excellence.
